On this special Day for Decent Work, the BWI wishes to draw attention to the importance of organizing unions in order to improve workers’ working and living conditions. 903 women are being exploited at the stone quarry of Pissy in Burkina Faso.

Working 11 hours a day, they carry big granite blocks to a place outside the quarry where they break them up with iron rods that they find at the local car demolition. They have no appropriate means of transport for conveying the granite blocks from one place to another. This means that they have no other choice than to carry huge stone blocks on their heads for a precarious wage of 20 euros per month. This is just enough to pay one meal per day. Their children are also exploited as soon as they acquire the strength to do the work. The youngest children play next to their mother in the dust like them without any health and safety protection.

Since 2006, we encouraged these women to organise. Our affiliate FTBBF in the country has assisted these women to organise. They were offered training on health and safety, HIV/Aids, and awareness of their rights as workers. They also understood that they could come up with demands to their employer: • mechanical transport of the blocks • distribution of protection material and appropriate working tools • opening of a nursery and a school • organize a literacy programme for the women workers • opening of a site canteen. http://www.bwint.org/default.asp?Index=1876&Language=EN

Travail décent au Burkina Faso: les travailleuses de la carrière de Pissy

A l’occasion de la première journée internationale du Travail Décent, l’IBB souhaite rappeler l’utilité et l’opportunité de s’organiser en syndicats afin d’améliorer les conditions de travail. Ainsi, souhaitons nous attirer l’attention sur la situation dramatique des 903 femmes exploitées à la carrière de Pissy au Burkina Faso.

Près de 11 heures de travail quotidien, elles concassent les blocs de granit avec des outils aussi rudimentaires que des blocs de fer récupérés sur des épaves de voitures. Et que dire du transport des blocs de pierres sur leur tête pour un salaire précaire de 20 euros par mois permettant à peine un repas par jour. N’oublions pas de signaler l’exploitation de leurs enfants dès qu’ils acquièrent la force de concasser la pierre. Les plus jeunes subissent les mêmes contraintes de telles conditions de travail, dépourvus de protection de santé et sécurité et d’hygiène.

Dès 2006, nous avons incité ces femmes à se syndiquer. FTBBF a beaucoup aidé ces femmes afin qu’elles s’organisent en syndicat. Diverses formations ont été mises en place sur les thèmes de la santé et sécurité, du VIH/Sida, ainsi que sur la connaissance de leurs droits de travailleuses. Des revendications ont vu le jour pour améliorer leur travail au quotidien:

 transport mécanique des blocs de pierre
 distribution de matériel de protection et de manutention d’outils
 organisation d’une garderie et d’une école
 alphabétisation des travailleuses
 réalisation de sanitaires
