The Confederal Executive Board of USO, which reunited in Madrid on July 8 2008, launched the final stage of the World Day for Decent Work Action plan, based on the following parameters:
1. Some days after the reunion of ITUC-CSI Council, which took place in Washington, December of 2007 and launched the World Day for Decent Work, USO started the preparatory process:
- By editing and diffusing a poster (60X40) which informs about the World Day and emphases on the value and the concept of “Decent Work” according to what was decided by the OIT. We enclose the mentioned poster on PDF format.
- By the publication of “UNION SINDICAL” (digital version, newspaper sent by post to all affiliates’ home address and the international version) and by publications from USO regional unions and professional federations which include extended information about the World Day of Action for Decent Work.
- By relating the celebration of the 1st of May of 2008 with the World Day, using the same slogan. Herein we attach the USO poster and manifesto for the 1st of May.
2. Quite soon, USO will publish a new poster calling to march on 7th of October under the slogan: “Men and women workers; we are not tools”. Also USO will publish another poster with all our demands in relation to the 7th of October and the USO Call to Action based on the following lines:
- Against economic crisis and unemployment
- In defence of immigrants
- Against the unsafe working conditions
- In defence of purchasing power of the salaries, which diminishes despite the economic growth
- For women’s working and social equality
- For a productive and non speculative economic model based on competitive quality and decent work
- Against the project of 65 working hours
- For a fair and human immigration policy
- Against an ultraliberal Europe of social dumping and constant erosion of salaries.
- For a social, solider, constitutional and democratic Europe RIGHT NOW
- For a fair and rational globalization, based on Decent Work, Solidarity and Social Justice
- To respect and accomplish on world level OIT’s terms and agreements, especially, those related to union’s freedom, collective negotiations and Decent Work
- For the accomplishment of the Millennium objectives of United Nations, with an urgent and special mention to those who are fighting against poverty all over the world, defending health, education and women rights
3. The final step which leads successfully to the World Day of Action, will start the 1st of September. The main lines are:
- Diffusion by all means of the objectives and demands of the World Day of Action for Decent Work: press-conferences, wide diffusion of the Manifesto, web, with an especial emphasis to work centres and strategic sectors (airports, transports centres and companies with special difficulties, etc)
- Popularization of the historic successes of ITUC-CSI and the Trade Unions solidarity as the keys for success in the struggle for the globalization of decent work as well as the alternative globalization. A diffusion of all ITUC-CSI items: information guides about theWorld Day, decent work, child labour, decent work and decent life for women, manifestos and calls to action produced before the 7th of October,
- To request to all kinds of institutions (governmental, political, economic, parliamentary, social, religious, universities, etc) to join, by a written statement, the World Day of Action for Decent Work. As an example we attach the Statement of the Youth Council of Spain which calls young people to be present at the mobilization of the 7th of October, following the call from ITUC-CSI and their Spanish affiliates: CCOO, UGT and USO.
- A press-conference in Madrid the 1st of October of 2008, with the participation of our colleague, Guy Ryder, Secretary General of the ITUC-CSI along with his counterparts from CCOO, UGT and USO.
- On the World Day of Action we take actions according to the following lines:
- Delegate assemblies in the most important workplaces, at the union’s headquarters, symbolic work pauses in the afternoon and street mobilizations
- Marches of all working union delegates to the appropriate institutions to hand them in the written petitions produced from the World Day of Action for Decent Work
- The USO President will lead a delegation to Paris the 7th of October to the demonstration organized by ITUC-CSI, the CES and the French Trade Unions
4. For USO it is important to reach a full agreement between all Spanish affiliates of CSI (CCOO, UGT, USO and ELA-STV) to celebrate together the World Day of Action. It would empower us and it would give us more credibility and cohesion and bigger chance of success. If finally we reach the mentioned agreement, some of USO proposals included in the present text will be adapted, logically, to the joint agreement.
To conclude, women and men, colleagues from the Trade Unions, affiliates to CSI from all over the world; receive the most fraternal regards from USO of Spain and a call to prepare for the World Day for Decent Work. Our future depends on us; the future of work and the working class from all over the world, the future of the ITUC-CSI, our best instrument, as well as the future of our national Trade Unions and organizations.
